About us
The Derbyshire Singers is a lively choir of enthusiastic singers whose aim is to entertain and inspire audiences with committed and polished performances of a wide range of music. We perform a wide range of choral music from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first – Gabrieli through to works by Paul Patterson and Eric Whitacre. The choir is well known for employing national and international professional orchestral players, groups and soloists, many of whom have become well-known names to music lovers. These include baritone Christopher Maltman, soprano Geraldine McGreevy, trumpeter Crispian Steel-Perkins, the ensemble His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts, guitarist Craig Ogden and mezzo-soprano Catherine Wyn-Rogers, a former member of the choir until she won her singing scholarship to The Royal College of Music.
The Derbyshire Singers’ Annual Choral Days and Weekends, directed by distinguished musicians such as Ralph Allwood, Laszlo Heltay, Brian Kay, Nigel Perrin and Neil Ferris, have been immensely popular with singers from all over England and are oversubscribed from year to year.
The choir usually performs three or four concerts per year and is a non-profit-making organisation.
Jonathan Allsopp currently serves as Assistant Director of Music at Southwell Minster, where he is the principal accompanist to the Cathedral Choir and regularly conducts them and the Minster Chorale, the Cathedral’s adult voluntary choir. He oversees both the annual organ recital series and Music in the State Chamber, a series in support of Southwell Minster Choir Association, which promotes young and local musicians.
Jonathan's previous experience includes holding organ scholarships at the cathedrals of Westminster, Durham, and Hereford.
